for the most part i wear what i want, when i want. i don't tend to pay too much attention to what other people have to say about my clothing because i like to forge my own path in that respect. clothing/style is so personal (or at least i think it should be) and i have never wanted my clothing to represent anything other than me, myself and i.

sometimes, however, its hard to create your own style because everyone just shops from the same stores! my solution to a world with no originality? (other than shopping vintage...) patterns! and i don't just mean buying and wearing patterns, i mean doing something different with those patterns. for example, if you try mixing patterns there is very little chance of you mimicking others. you are the only one who would choose to put pattern a with pattern b. but pattern mixing can be tricky. you have to find the right balance of matchiness to uniqueness. you don't want to go crazy and put hot pink and purple polka dots next to dark red and black crosses (though i am sure this could be accomplished with much class)

that is exactly what i love about patterns.

house of hackney are the pattern gods. i believe they started out as a wallpaper and home interiors company, but have expanded to the world of fashion. and boy am i thankful. they take patterns from inside the home, patterns that you are more likely to see on the walls of 1950s british home, and imprint them onto beautifully crafted clothing items. and they are just so good at it.
if you look carefully at the photo above, you will see that she is wearing a dress and sitting on a chair, which is in a room all covered by the same pattern. this is magic people. this is how you do patterns.

ever since my mom took me to the beverly hills hotel when i was 14 i have been obsessed with the funky palm leaf wall paper pattern that covers those prestigious hallways. HoH has reincarnated the infamous wallpaper and brought it to life in more mediums than i had ever dreamed of.

the thing about the patterns created by house of hackney, is that they are the perfect starting place. they are patterns, but they aren't too intense. you can add patterns on top of these patterns and not feel as though the world is looking at you thinking "this girl thinks she knows patterns. she doesn't know patterns".
but see, i don't even like florals. they're too easy. but i like these florals! wtf HoH?
with the helpful hand of house of hackney, you can do patterns too.

anyway... that is enough from me! tell me what you think in the comments below, and are there any pattern composers you love?

40 days of dating is a project started by new york based designers jessica walsh and timothy goodman. the two had been friends for a while and decided to embark on an experiment to see what would happen if they dated for 40 days. so far, the results seem to be quite revealing.
throughout the 40 days, the two must obey the rules, which are very artfully laid out in this video:

its a really interesting idea but I'm a little confused as to what they are trying to accomplish. i've only read up to day 20 so maybe things will become more clear as the days go by. it is, however, producing some very easy to understand videos!! (for ex am ple)

i don't want to express too many opinions so check it out for yourself and tell me what you think in the comments below!

for my first real post (numero uno counts as post #0 simply because it was a jumping off point... i.e. not real) I want to appreciate yellow gingham. and all things yellow for that matter.

i recently saw this outfit:

posted to the opening ceremony instagram and realized how much i actually love yellow gingham. even though red gingham is a classic, and blue gingham can make you look totally sweet, i had never really thought to include yellow gingham in any part of my life, let alone my wardrobe. today i am recognizing the colour yellow, for all the unnoticed work it has done in the fashion world. unnoticed, that is, by me.

these pants exist on the opening ceremony website.. and probably in the stores as well. i want them. pls.  also there is this:

i've always loved the patterns on 70s wall papers (like this, this and this), and i feel like this sweater takes on a more subdued version of those patterns. they also have this same pattern in different colours and styles so if you want to be all totally like 70s then definitely take a look!

this girl is too cute and might just happen to have a thing for 70s wallpaper design as well.
she writes the blog fancy treehouse and sells her own vintage clothing here. she wears whatever the hell she wants and always looks amazing. lets all try to be a bit more like Coury.

and here is my contribution...
i bought this dress at a vintage shop in montreal and have worn it every day since. that's an exaggeration. but it is literally falling apart because of how often i wear it. maybe one day i'll post a photo where you can actually see what it looks like..

just because i also mentioned gingham i thought i would include this photo:
vanessa jackman found this girl and i know it isn't yellow but she looks so good. i will dream of this outfit forever.

until next time.......

**i do not own any of these photos unless otherwise stated
